My style is best characterized by the use of intense color and texture. My pastel work is influenced by the impressionists, who used saturated color, texture, and pointillism. I paint all kinds of landscapes, including seashores, coasts, and desert geography. Most of my paintings are done employing classical techniques and I have attended workshops by some of the leading pastelists practicing today. However, some of my paintings are also experimental, including more abstract compositions, experimentation with color theory, and mosaic effects.
My digital art is also impressionistic with pointillism and expressive effects. The French fauves, with their bold colors, have also been influential. My digital images are inspired by locations. I travel frequently and take lots of photographs. Back in the studio I take those photos and add filter effects, then often digitally paint on top of those effects. Some works show more of the computer-generated results while others are more painterly.
My life and work spans disciplines, as I am both an artist and a vision scientist. I’ve spent more than 30 years researching topics in visual perception, including the field of empirical aesthetics where I investigates the aesthetic qualities of abstract shapes.
My landscape images have received critical acclaim, having won several awards. And I am a member of the American Impressionist Society, the Pastel Society of America and the Connecticut Pastel Society. Articles about my work have appeared in The Poughkeepsie Journal newspaper and The Greenwich Times. I have also authored multiple books on graphic design, tattoo patterns, pastel landscapes and digital photo art, as well as a textbook on the psychology of art.
